Moving

This weekend is my last weekend living in PA. Come this Tuesday, Kate and I will be moving to Savannah! Its really exciting, and we are really excited to live in our new house!

We won't have internet until the end of the week, so don't expect to hear much from me until then, but I'll be sure to update as soon as we get in!

Today my parents are throwing me an early birthday celebration, serving me steak and carrot cake.

My mouth is watering.

Sunday, July 24, 2011

Today I woke up and worked. I finished the next page of Smuggler's Run and am looking forward to getting the next page done over the week as I pack up for my move to Savannah next week!

I'm going to miss all my friends in PA, but we are all getting older and getting ready to move away, and I'm looking forward to the opportunities that Savannah will provide(hopefully).

Im enjoying this comic even though I don't have as much time to work on it as I like.

I hope you enjoy it!

Harry Potter Week Sketch : Girls of Hogwarts

It was pointed out to me that I have a tendency to draw male characters over female. It's true. Its not that I dont like female characters, or dislike drawing them, but I usually feel more comfortable drawing males, and am usually more pleased with how they turn out, as you can make males looks uglier and more scarred, and they come off cooler.

So as the grand finale for the Harry Potter sketch week, I decided to draw the three main female protagonists of the series, Hermione, Luna, and Ginny.

I hope you enjoy!!!

Hermione!! No books in this picture :P

Luna always seems to be lost in thought.

Ginny. I think the actress is the movies is good, but the books really describe her as being very beautiful, so I wanted to capture that more with this sketch.

I hope everyone enjoyed following the sketches this week, and enjoyed some of them!! I had a great time doing them all!! Now I am off to watch Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 1, head to bed, then wake up and see Pt. 2 tomorrow!

Harry Potter Week Sketch : Dark Lord Voldemort

The arch villian! I am really looking forward to seeing the movie this next week! As much as I want to see it over the weekend, I know the crowds are going to be RIDICULOUS! So instead Kate and myself are going to stay inside at watch the first seven films and spend some time together as this weekend as been pretty hectic and we haven't had alot of time to just hang out.

I know the upload is a little late, I was working on Smuggler's Run when I realized it wasn't Friday anymore! There will still be a Saturday sketch, never fear!!!

Also, go see Harry Potter.

Harry Potter Week Sketch : Severus Snape

Night Three!!! I hope you all are enjoying this as much as I am internet :P

Professor Severus Snape of Potions
Yes, it is he, Severus Snape, Master of Potions, Slytherin Extraordinaire, and Death Eater!!!

I did this sketch after just getting back from a great dinner with my fiance's family at a local italian place. Chicken Parmesan and Wine are sitting well.

Go see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two this weekend!!!

Harry Potter Week Sketch: Dumbledore

Night 2 of the Harry Potter Sketch Extravaganza!

Dumbledore

Tonight I did one of my favorite Harry Potter Characters, Dumbledore. I loved that in the book he was portrayed very human, even though he was a powerful wizard, he is not god-like, and makes his own mistakes throughout the story.

I wanted to get alot of action and movement into this sketch, I think I succeeded.

Harry Potter Week Sketch : Kreacher

So I was reading Robert Atkin's blog today, and he mentioned that he is doing a "Harry Potter Sketch week" in celebration of the final movie being released this weekend!

I love Harry Potter and I'm really looking forward to seeing the final movie! I also thought that Rob's idea was awesome, so I'm totally stealing it and doing it too!

Here is the first sketch of the week! I'm not exactly timing myself, but I'm trying to keep the drawings pretty short, somewhere between 30 mins and an hour.

Enjoy!

Kreacher is grumpy.

Smuggler's Run Page Process

The comic has been going much slower than I like. That being said, it is getting done, and I thought it would be fun to show my work process a little bit, a kinda beginning to end sorta thing. I still experiment alot as I go, but overall I have a pretty decent process worked out. All that said, here you go, the first page of Smuggler's Run.

Thumbnails
1. First I do a thumbnail. I like to spot my blacks in the thumbnails, as well as work out the rough balloon placement. This particular thumb is 3x2 or so.

Pencils
2. Next step is doing the layout and the pencils on the 11x17 bristol board. I prefer to use vellum bristol, as it holds ink much better. That being said, it doesn't hold up as well to working out alot of erasing and re-working the same as a smooth board. Its a bit of a tradeoff for me, but since I work over the pencils anyway, its not as big of a concern for me.

Background black.
3. This particular page has alot of black since the story is set in space. I decided to fill in all the blacks for the space area before inking anything else. The last panel is different from the thumbnail, as I realized that the crop I wanted would look really really weird combined with the black. I decided that I'll do a sort of "negative" approach for that panel.

Inks
4. The final inks. I add the stars and played around a bit with layering. I am not happy with the second panel. It feels very boring to me, and the face seems really chubby and wonky once I inked it.

Final Page
5. Paste up of panel 2. I'm alot happier with this one. While the angle isn't quite as extreme, I still think it is pretty readable, and I think it flows better.

Here is a fun detail of the establishing shot. I really love doing space and stars, and I am pretty happy with how this one came out!

Ill continue to update on the remaining pages, though I don't think I'll upload every as I finish, but we will see!

The most badass thing you can think of in five words #1

I need a better camera phone?

Or else a scanner.

This is a warmup drawing I did before inking the first page of my space comic project. I asked my buddy Jameson what the "most badass thing he could think of in 5 words or less" and then I did a drawing based on what he mentioned.

The Adem

New art!

I have been reading Patrick Rothfuss's Wise Man's Fear, and I was inspired to draw some of the Adem mercenaries from the story. I don't use color often, much less traditionally, but I felt it was worth a shot, and I'm pretty please with how it came out. The blood red garb of the mercenaries is a primary trait that is a centerpoint of their design, so I had to include it!

I have been pretty busy over the past few weeks, between work, figuring out wedding plans, and getting stuff set up for the move and I have not made nearly as much time for myself to draw as I should have. Two weeks ago Kate and I went to Savannah to find an apartment, and were lucky enough to find a totally sweet spot that we both love, and pretty much fit every criteria we were looking for. This past weekend was spent looking at wedding venues, moving the remainder of my packed belongings to her apartment, and spending time with the family over the 4th of July.

All in all it was a pretty great weekend, but I have been jonesing to sit down at the drawing board, so tonight was more that just work, it was pure fun.

Im still working on the comic, updates will continue!
