2013, HeroesCon, and upcoming Comics Projects!

Time to update!

I am currently two weeks into the final quarter of my senior year, mere weeks away from finishing my undergraduate degree, a Bachelor's of Fine Arts in Sequential Art at the Savannah College of Art and Design.

It's been an amazing four or so years here, and it has definitely changed my life for the better. I have not only the drive to succeed, but the tools and means to as well. Four years ago I decided to take control of my life and make a change, pursue the dream that floated in my head since I was a child. Now I'm seeing one of the first milestones in that dream come true!

So what does this really all mean?

Currently for my senior project, I'm working on pages for a graphic novel story that I wrote in spring of last year. I'll be taking the package to a few publishers, hopefully piquing their interest, and getting my first major tale into the world and into people's hands. There is no guarantee of course that my book will get picked up, but that's not going to stop me from completing it and seeing it published, even if it means I need to do this myself. I'll be keeping all of you updated with everything I can in relation to this and it's progress.

I am also working on a really cool anthology project headed up by the talented and hardworking . It's called "Playlist" and it's going to have awesome comics drawn by myself and friends of mine based on awesome songs and music that inspires all of us. There will be a Kickstarter for this project sometime in the next few weeks or months, and any and all support we can get for this will be great. Share, donate, support comics and art! Believe me, this will a project you'll want to be a part of.

Finally, I have my first gallery show next month here in Savannah Ga. It's called "The Underground Comix Show" and it will feature original art and stories by local comic artists and illustrators in Savannah. If you are in the area and like comics, independent artists, and/or unique stories, this is will be the place to be! Mini-comics of the work shown will be available, and it's going to be awesome.

The show starts at 6pm February 8th at the Ashmore Gallery, and will be open until February 12th.  You can check out more info at the facebook event site here [link]

I'll also be opening commission projects up once I've graduated, probably on a 1-3 slot rotating basis for those interested. Keep an eye out for announcements concerning this, if you're interested in getting an awesome original illustration from me, this will be the time.


I will also have a table this year at HeroeCon in Charlotte, NC. If you go to HeroesCon or are in the area, come by and say hi, buy some prints or a sketch, and chat! I'll be sure to update when I have table numbers and specifics!

Max Starwind Desolation - Black and White

Here's the black and white version of a cover I'm working on as the next project for my Cover Design class at SCAD. We will be doing three different covers featuring my professor's character Max Starwind.

Each cover will be based on a different theme. This cover is based "Heroic".

I'm please with how it turned out so far.

Line Out - V2 Tight Roughs!

So I had a few people ask to see the tight roughs I've been working on for the second set of the Line Out comic that I'm doing for my Visual Storytelling 2 class.

Well, here they are!

I wanted to leave these much looser that my last set as I felt they ended up becoming a little devoid of life there at the end. Sometimes too tight and you lose all the energy.

These are drastically different from the first set, although the overall story is the same.

This is the first finished comic pages for our project in my Visual Storytelling 2 class at SCAD.

Over this quarter we will be investigating different ways of telling the same story three separate times, without using the same shots, pacing, or layouts.

This is attempt one, I'm happy with some of it, and there is stuff I'd change, but time to move on to the next ones!

I don't particularly doing finished pencils, I typically ink them before they get this tight, but it's a good learning experience regardless.

Belgariad Cover Process

Hey all! So here's just a quick walkthrough of my first project for my Cover Illustration and Design class!

We are to take an old property and re-imagine it for a modern audience. I decided to do the fantasy novel series The Belgariad. I enjoyed the novels quite a bit and I think they could make a cool graphic novel series.

Here's a rundown of the process!

I start with a rough thumbnail for the composition.

Next I make a tight rough based on the thumbnail.

I lightbox a blown up version of the rough, add details and tighten up the rough.

Finally, I ink it!

I did forget to mention that I did a small black placement study on a small printout of the pencil page so that I didn't have to place it all with in the pencil stage.

Line Out - Thumbnails and more!

Hey all!

So classes have just started up again, and I'm really looking forward to the new quarter! This quarter I'm finally getting a class that focuses on making finished comic pages, as well as a class for Cover Design! Both are going to be alot of fun for me, as well as challenging me in new ways!


Most of the stuff I've been working on for these classes has been process work, but I thought it would be fun to show some of the sketches and designs, as well as thumbnails for the final pages.

For the rest of the quarter I'll be working on a story called Line Out that I wrote for this class. It's a short scene involving two computer hackers trying to escape from some MIBs in a crowded bus terminal. Anyway, it's all sci-fi and stuff, so I'm pumped to draw it.

Kara, my protagonist. She's gotta cool robot arm that has really powerful hacking technology built in that can interface with her brain. 

Vincent, my other lead. He's more of a side kick sort, but he is also a proficient hacker.

For this class we will actually be doing 4 sets of 4 thumbnails for 16 total. Eventually we will be doing 3 of the four sets to finished completed pages!

Here are the first two sets. I think it would be fun to show two different ways to tell the same story, and also show a little bit of how I work. Thumbnails are basically for me, I end up redrawing everything later anyway, but here I can get a good idea of what I want on each page, the pacing, and a basic idea of framing and composition.

This is my first set, and probably overall the closest in my head to what I was thinking as I wrote. There are a few panels here and there I will definitely need to do some serious perspective work on, but I'm pretty pleased with these overall. 

The 2nd set. I think the last page here looks awesome, mainly that shot of the jump. Both are pretty epic but there is something about that one to me that I just really enjoy. 

So there it is! Over this quarter I don't know that I'll be uploading every version of the pages that I do, but the final inked and lettered version will definitely be up here! Keep an eye out!

Ghetto Illustration

Ink Drawing done for my inking class at SCAD.

I have a sad little story about this drawing. I left the original of this image in the scanner at Wallin Hall about two and a half hours before the building closed. I didn't realize until the next morning, and went over immediately, and the drawing was gone. People leave drawings lying around that building all the time, so I know it was probably stolen. I asked around the hall and none of the professors or administrators had seen it, nor had it been turned in.

Sad.

SpaceJunk City

Environment with some characters done for my Character Design and Storyboarding for Animation class at SCAD.

I had alot of fun making this! I usually don't use as much deadline, but since this is designed for animation I can't get all loose and expressive with my strokes. Still, its good practice, and learning to draw in a minimalist style will only help you make better complex work!

Finals are over, Skyrim comes, and some awesome art!

So finals are over! This past week as been totally crazy, and I haven't updated my blog for a bit because of it, but no fear! I will show you lots of awesome art today!

First up, here are some of my favorite pages I did all quarter, and a sneak peek into a project that I've been writing for awhile! These pages are for a story called SCRAWL, about a struggling writer in near future world. I wanted to have a few sequential pages so that I could at least visualize the world and storytelling, so I created these for the final project in Environments, Props, and Structures.

Awesome right!? These are just the pencilled versions, I plan on inking them over the break!

For my Environments, Props, and Structures class, I did two pages from different scripts, experimenting with different inking and watercolor techniques! I enjoyed these pages as well, and I'm pleased with them.

Meet Cute

I hope you enjoy! I had a great quarter, but I'm definitely looking forward to the time off, as I'm starting brand new comic project today!

First things first though, it's time for breakfast and some dragon slaying!

Walking Dead, Mystery Box, and a Gun Show

So I loved last night's season two premiere of The Walking Dead. Being a fan of the comics, I am glad to see Kirkman's masterpiece brought to the screen, but I am also enjoying the differences between the books and the show.

During our props class today, we had to draw a girl with a gun based on photo reference, and after drawing the girl I was to inspired not to leave it blank, and I added some (not so perfect in perspective) zombies in honor of the Walking Dead.

We also had to draw a Mysterious Box, purchased by my professor at a yardsale over the weekend. The box is a genuine artifact, a tool used in the early 20th century which measured electrical currents.

We determined the box would be a great McGuffin for some sort of story, it positively reeks of mystery and intrigue, which is typical of even the most mundane old artifacts.

Finally, we had to draw ten different guns for our homework project. I really enjoyed this and since I'm going to be working on a story set in the 50s over the next few months, I thought it would be a good idea to learn up on some World War Two period weaponry. It's interesting how little our firearms have truly changed over the past 80 years, beyond the materials and the cosmetic differences.
